Component 9: Secondary Trauma Care and Services Centres

Definition

Facilities offering general surgery, orthopaedic care, critical care and early rehabilitation. Some regional secondary trauma centres, which are part of a consortium of care and social facilities, are responsible for providing highly specialized neurotrauma services in their region.

Clientele

Severe trauma and multiple trauma victims who do not require the services of tertiary trauma care and services centres or expert care centres.

Goal

Provide immediate and on-site critical and acute care to victims of severe trauma who do not require tertiary trauma care. Provide early rehabilitation, when needed, and rapidly transfer trauma victims who require tertiary centre care or expert care to the appropriate facility.

Sample Measures

The INESSS Trauma Advisory Group carries out the mandate to run and manage the Continuous Quality Improvement Program in Traumatology. Under INESSS’s responsibility, the Trauma Services Advisory Group (Physical Health component), working in collaboration with the Trauma Services Advisory Group (Rehabilitation/Support for Social Participation component), evaluates trauma care and services centres and issues recommendations on their designation or on the preservation of their designation as part of the ongoing Quality Improvement Program.

INESSS’s Trauma Services Continuum Team ensures that the Advisory Group’s recommendations are implemented.
